Last updated October 26, 2026. Built from the City of Cape Coral's own canal depth survey (City data as of April 7, 2026), summarized by canal on this page and rechecked monthly as new areas are surveyed. About this data.
Listings never say how deep the water is. The City of Cape Coral has started measuring it, canal by canal, with a boat and a depth sounder, and publishes the raw readings. This page turns those 111,000 readings into one number per canal you can actually use: the typical bottom, the shallow stretches, and the deep spots. Hover or tap a canal on the map, or find it in the list below.
The depth map
Color is the typical (median) bottom reading along the canal. Hover or tap for the shallow and deep stretches. Canals with no color haven't been surveyed yet. Feet below the City's survey datum; see what the numbers mean.
What the survey shows so far
The City has measured 254 named saltwater canals: 219 in the southeast, 34 in the southwest, and one at the northeast edge. The northwest and the rest of the southwest are not surveyed yet; this page will add them as the City publishes them.
- Southeast Cape Coral. Typical bottom 6.7 ft, and half of the surveyed SE canals fall between 6.4 and 7.2 ft. Shallow stretches typically read about 6.1 ft.
- Southwest Cape Coral (surveyed part). Deeper on the whole: typical bottom 9.2 ft, because the surveyed SW canals include the big basins around Cape Harbour and the South Spreader Waterway.
- The shallowest surveyed canals (shallow stretches under 5.5 ft): Vendome, Calusa, Rutland, Coral Pointe, Viking, Fermi, Vincennes, Venetian, Cat Cay Lake, Riverhead West, Little, Spreader Waterway East, Versaille, Genoa North, Tampico, Viceroy, Waikiki, Riverhead North, Sequoia, Morley, Chantrey, Cornwallis, Rainbow, Constable, Sherwood.
- The deepest (typical bottom over 15 ft): Palos, Merrick, Orduna, Nevada, Palos Lake, Ramsey, Eternity, Keats, Lake Louise, Odyssey, Orchid, Cactus.
Two things the map makes plain. First, Cape Coral's canals were dug for boats, and the survey backs that up: the ordinary canal is 6 to 7 feet, not 2 or 3. Second, depth is a canal-by-canal fact, not a neighborhood fact. Two canals a block apart can differ by a foot and a half, which is the difference between a comfortable lift and a boat that touches at low tide.
What the numbers mean, and what they don't
Bottom elevation, not depth at low tide. The City records the elevation of the canal bottom against a fixed survey datum. To know how much water sits over that bottom at low tide you need the tide datum offset for Cape Coral, which the City has been asked to confirm; this page will add a "feet at mean low water" column when it does. Until then, treat the figures as relative: a 7-ft canal has about a foot more water than a 6-ft canal, at any tide.
Typical versus shallow stretch. The typical number is the middle reading along the canal. The shallow-stretch number is the reading that 90 percent of the canal is deeper than, which is closer to what your keel cares about. Shoaling at a canal mouth or a dead end can be shallower still; that is what the survey's individual points are for, and Laurel can pull them for any address.
What the City is doing with this. The survey feeds the City's canal dredging program, which ranks canals by bottom elevation and traffic and dredges the worst to a permitted limit of five feet below mean low water. If a canal you care about is red or orange on the map, it is the kind the program is meant to catch.
Depth is what floats the boat. Canal width is what sells the photo; depth at the dock is what decides whether a lift and a 26-footer work. Pair this page with what draft runs where, the bridge heights on the way out, and minutes to open water for the route.

Feet below the City's survey datum. Typical = median of the readings along the canal; shallow stretch = 90th-percentile shallow reading; deep stretch = 10th-percentile. Names and outlines are the City's. Canal not listed? It hasn't been surveyed yet. The canal map covers every named canal, salt or fresh.
Questions people ask
How deep are the canals in Cape Coral?
Of the 254 saltwater canals the City has surveyed, the typical bottom is about 6.8 feet below the survey datum, with shallow stretches around 6.2 feet. The deep basins near Cape Harbour run 15 to 23 feet. Individual canals vary, which is why this page lists each one.
Is Cape Coral canal water deep enough for a boat?
For most of the surveyed canals, yes for the boats people actually keep here: center consoles, bay boats and cruisers in the 20-to-30-foot range on lifts. The handful of canals with shallow stretches under 5 feet suit shallower-draft boats. Check the specific canal, then match it to your draft.
Where does this depth data come from?
The City of Cape Coral Public Works Department's Canal Bathymetric Depth Survey, a public dataset of about 111,000 sounded points collected to plan dredging. This page summarizes those points by canal; the City's own map shows every individual reading.
Why isn't my canal on the list?
The City has surveyed the southeast canal network and part of the southwest so far. The northwest and the remaining southwest canals are not measured yet. This page is rechecked monthly and adds canals as the City publishes them.
Does the City dredge the canals?
Yes. Cape Coral has a citywide canal dredging program funded through stormwater fees, with a permitted limit of five feet below mean low water. Canals are prioritized by bottom elevation and boat traffic.
Can I get the depth at a specific dock?
Yes. Send Laurel the address and she will pull the City's individual readings along that seawall and tell you what they mean for a lift and your boat. Call or text 239-672-1699.
About this data
Depth readings: City of Cape Coral Public Works Department, Canal Bathymetric Depth Survey (public dataset, City data as of April 7, 2026). Canal names and outlines: City of Cape Coral GIS. Per-canal figures on this page are the median, 90th-percentile-shallow and 10th-percentile-deep readings inside each canal outline, computed by Laurel ONeill from the City's points; readings above the water line at seawall edges are excluded. Page rechecked monthly; "Last updated" at the top reflects the most recent refresh. Verify depths at a specific dock before relying on them.
